MySQL connection not established on macOS

After installing the MySQL community server (8.4.0 LTS) and workbench (8.0.36) and opening the workbench I see the following action "Could not connect, server may not be running" and the following Response "Unable to connect to localhost". Upon testing the connection I also see the following "Failed to Connect to MySQL at localhost:3306 with user root". Please advise, I am at my wits end.
